Primary Elections? What Elections?

Did you know that the 13th Legislative District has not had a contested primary since President Barack Obama (for whom I helped raise about $30,000 by the way) was a State Senator? When President Obama became the U.S. Senator from Illinois, the Committeemen in our district picked a replacement, current Attorney General Kwame Raoul (for whom I voted in the Attorney General general election). He would run unopposed primary after primary until becoming our Attorney General. And now that he resigned, the party bosses got together again and picked someone who worked for Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle. This campaign is not about any one candidate or any one person. It is about us having a choice in who represents us.

We. Deserve. A. Real. Choice.

Their Money, Their Campaign

The current State Senator from our district, only in office since January 2019, has already raised thousands of dollars from business interests (including fossil fuels), corporate PACs, and lobbyists. (In that figure we do not include donations from groups who lobby on behalf of progressive causes or working people, like PACs created by unions or non-profit organizations.)

Here is a sample of donors to the current Senator's campaign:

  • Ameren, an energy company

  • Comcast Financial Agency Corporation

  • Associated Beer Distributors of Illinois

  • John C. Corrigan & Associates (registered lobbyists)

  • Kasper & Nottage, P.C. (registered lobbyists)

  • Realtor Political Action Committee

  • Illinois Hotel-Motel PAC

  • AT&T

  • Illinois Hospital Association PAC

  • Illinois Optometric Association, P.A.C.

  • Peoples Gas

  • Roosevelt Group (registered lobbyists)

  • Scarabaeus LLC (registered lobbyists)

  • Illinois American Water Company

  • Illinois BANKPAC
